All three work off the same rotating laser plane – pick by who reads the laser. The operator on a staff, the operator in the cab, or the blade itself.

Rotating Laser

The reference plane on a tripod. Sets datum and slope across site-wide distances. Read with a millimetre receiver on a staff for setting out, checking RL, marking batters and channel grades. Single-axis grade for falls, dual-axis for compound grades.

Machine Receiver

Mounts to the bucket or blade. Operator gets a heads-up LED display in the cab – green for on-grade, red arrows for cut/fill. No staff person, no second operator. Faster trim work because the operator stays in the seat.

Laser Automation

The receiver bolts to the blade hydraulics through a control box. Operator sets the cut, the system drives the blade to the laser plane automatically. Trim quality on every pass for finished pads, channels and roads.

Single-ram (MCR900) for skid-steer blades and land planes; dual-ram (MCR910) for blades with two independent rams. Pair with one of the grade lasers above and the receiver drives the blade hydraulics to match the laser plane automatically. Trim quality on every pass.

Road sub-grade & trim

Set the laser to the design crossfall, run the blade with a single-ram automation system, hold trim quality on every pass. Compound grades on a dual-axis flagship laser for the full road profile.

Channel & drainage grade

Set the laser to a known fall (1-in-1000, 1-in-2000) and run the channel to grade for the entire length. Receiver in the cab or on the staff, every metre of channel holds the design fall.

Pad trim for slabs & sheds

Trim the pad to FFL minus the design depth with a machine receiver on the bucket. Operator stays in the cab, no staff person, finished surface ready for boxing or compaction.

Site set-out & datum

Run a benchmark off the survey peg, set instrument height, transfer the datum site-wide. One laser plane, all the heights on the site come off it – set-out, cut/fill, trim heights.

Bulk earthworks & cut/fill

Hand-held mm receiver on a staff for the labourer, machine receiver on the bucket for the operator. Same laser plane, both reading off the same datum, no double-handling.

Dam batters & bunds

Set wall height and batter slope, hold the floor to design RL with the laser plane. Receiver on the staff confirms grade at every point in the cut.

How to choose a construction laser level


Match the laser to the job in front of you. These are the picks we give over the phone – if it moves dirt to a design level, there’s a spot in the range for it.

Level only – pads, footings, site datum

The BASIC614 keeps it simple with a dual-sided graduated receiver, or step up to the EL614 for a millimetre receiver that reads down to 0.5mm. Both are horizontal-only rotary lasers with 1-button electronic levelling.

Falls for drainage and channels – single grade

The EL614S sets a single grade via slope remote – one person, no ladder work at the tripod. Read the fall on the staff with its 0.5mm receiver.

Grade matched to a receiver automatically

The EL614GM adds Auto Grade Match – stand the receiver at the height you want and the laser grades itself to it, up to ~50m away.

Compound grades plus vertical set-out

The EGL624GM runs dual grades via slope remote and auto-levels in both horizontal and vertical – one laser for levelling, grades, alignment and set-out.

Road profiles and finished pads – digital grade

The flagship DGL1010GM dials grades digitally to +/-10.000% in both axes, holds +/-1mm @ 20m and covers a 500m radius on its Class 3 red beam.

Heights read from the cab

Any red beam rotary laser drives the machine receivers. LEDs on the arm with the MR706, MR708 and MR710; a wired in-cab display on the D models; or the wireless in-cab MR825WD with plumb swing and blade tilt indication.

Hands-free blade control

The MCR900 runs one receiver and one ram (or two rams in series); the MCR910 runs two receivers and two rams independently. Both bolt into the machine’s hydraulics and hold the blade on the laser plane automatically.

Civil construction laser questions


Which laser level is best for civil construction?

It depends who reads the laser. For an operator on a staff: a rotating laser with a millimetre receiver – the EL614S for single-grade falls, or the DGL1010GM for digital dual-axis grades on roads and pads. For an operator in the cab: add a machine receiver to the bucket or blade. For hands-free trim work: a laser automation system drives the blade to the laser plane automatically.

What’s the difference between a machine receiver and laser automation?

A machine receiver shows the operator heights – green for on-grade, red arrows for cut or fill – and the operator moves the blade or bucket. A laser automation system closes the loop: the receiver connects to the blade hydraulics through a control box and the system drives the blade to the laser plane automatically. Receivers suit excavators and mixed fleets; automation suits blade implements like land planes and skid-steer blades.

Do the machine receivers work with any rotating laser?

The machine receiver range reads any red beam rotating laser, Class 2 or Class 3 – it doesn’t have to be a RedBack. Accuracy settings switch between fine (3-5mm) and coarse (5-25mm) so you can trade precision for speed depending on whether you’re trimming or bulk shifting.

How do I set a fall for drainage with a construction laser?

Set the laser to the design fall and the whole rotating plane tilts to match – every metre of the run then holds that grade. The EL614S sets a single grade via slope remote, the EGL624GM sets dual grades, and the DGL1010GM dials the exact percentage digitally to +/-10.000% in both axes. Read the fall on a staff with a millimetre receiver, or from the cab with a machine receiver.

How accurate are these construction laser levels?

The rotating lasers on this page hold +/-1.5mm @ 20m, and the flagship DGL1010GM tightens that to +/-1mm @ 20m. On the ground you read them with a 0.5mm millimetre receiver. Machine receivers switch between fine (3-5mm) and coarse (5-25mm) settings to suit trim or bulk work.

Do I need a red or green beam laser for civil work?

Outdoors the beam is read by a receiver, not by eye – so red does the job, and that’s why the civil range is red beam. The machine receivers here are built for red beam rotating lasers, Class 2 or Class 3. Class 3 models like the DGL1010GM put out more power (under 5mW versus under 1mW for Class 2), which is what stretches its range to a 500m radius.

Can one person set grades on site?

Yes. The EL614S sets a single grade solo via the slope remote. The EL614GM and EGL624GM go further with Auto Grade Match – stand the receiver at the height you want, press one button, and the laser grades itself to the receiver up to ~50m away. No second person calling corrections.

What if a laser gets knocked around on site?

It happens – these tools live on utes and in dust. RedBack provides in-house repair and calibration services in Australia for all RedBack lasers and most other laser brands. If a unit cops a hit and you’re not sure it’s reading true, call 1800 769 858 and we’ll sort out a check.
