Rotary Laser Levels with Grade
Single grade, dual grade and digital grade options — every model is a full rotary laser level with slope built in, high accuracy mm display receiver, heavy-duty steel chassis and 5-year warranty. Choose by the way you want to set grade.
From a simple slope laser for drainage and trenching through to a digital-grade unit for compound slopes on large earthmoving jobs — the principle is the same. One person, one setup, the grade locked in and held across the whole site.
Single Grade vs Dual Grade
The first decision when buying a grade laser level — do you need slope in one direction, or two?
Grade in one direction
A single grade laser sets a controlled slope on either the X or Y axis. The laser automatically maintains that grade over long distances at a consistent accuracy. Ideal when the job calls for a straight, uniform fall.
Common applications:
- Sewer & stormwater trenching
- Pipe runs with consistent fall
- Driveways and access paths
- Simple drainage lines
- General earthworks with one slope
Lower cost, simpler operation, and excellent accuracy across long runs. If most of your work is linear drainage or trenching, a single grade laser level covers it.
Grade in two directions
A dual grade laser gives independent slope control on both the X and Y axes — compound slopes falling in two directions at once. The laser continuously self-adjusts to hold both grades across the whole site.
Common applications:
- Car parks and large slabs
- Roads and hardstand areas
- Sports fields & playing surfaces
- Large drainage catchments
- Laser-controlled machinery & site works
Full control over complex geometry, higher productivity on large jobs, and no manual checking or re-setting. The professional standard for civil, commercial and infrastructure work.
Manual Grade via Slope Remote
One-person grade setting. Tilt the laser beam on its axis with the slope remote, no second pair of hands required.
- Single or dual grade depending on laser model
- Works across the full levelling range (up to ~8%)
- Remote range to ~60m on supported lasers
Manual grade setting uses the slope remote to tilt the laser’s beam to the percentage of slope you need. It’s the classic, tried-and-tested method on any rotary laser level with slope, and it’s the baseline capability across the RedBack grade range — from the entry-level EL614S through to the EGL624GM.
If you’re matching to a known grade — say a 1-in-60 drainage fall — you set the slope value and the laser holds it from that point on. Need to crunch the percentage for your run? Use the free Slope & Fall Calculator to work it out. Pair with a mm display receiver for high accuracy at the receiver end of the run.

Auto Grade Match
One-button slope matching to the mm receiver. Set the receiver at the height you want, press a button, and the laser tracks to and locks onto it.
- 1-button grade matching via the LR720T / LR730T tracking receivers
- Track to an existing slope across undulating ground
- Tracking range to ~50–80m depending on model
- Doubles as vertical auto-alignment for fencing & set-out (on supported models)
Auto Grade Match is one of the easiest and most accurate ways to set grade. Where the Grade Match lasers stand out is the automatic match-and-track feature driven by the LR720T and LR730T tracking receivers.
Method 1 — Set grade by height at distance: position the receiver at the target height away from the laser (for example, 100mm below level at 6m gives a 1-in-60 fall), press the auto-grade match button, and the laser finds and locks to it automatically.
Method 2 — Match an existing grade: ideal for setting a consistent grade across undulating ground — like a driveway on a hillside. Set the laser and receiver to equal heights above ground, move the receiver up or down the run, press the auto-grade button with the axis selected, and the laser locks to that position. From then on, a level reading anywhere along that axis means you’re on grade.
On lasers with vertical auto-alignment — EGL624GM and DGL1010GM — the same tracking logic works on a vertical plane, making it the ideal setup for fence alignment or long-range building set-out. Entry-level EL614GM covers horizontal auto-grade only.

Digital Grade / Dial-a-Grade
The quickest, most accurate way to set slope — dial grades as a percentage, to three decimal places, on either axis.
- Set single or dual grades with a 2-button press
- Accuracy to 3 decimal places (e.g. 1.667% — not rounded 1.7%)
- Grade range +/- 10.000% on both X and Y
- High-end feature at a mid-tier price
Digital Grade — often called Dial-a-Grade — is a feature normally locked away in the most expensive lasers on the market. The DGL1010GM puts it in reach for earthmovers, plumbers, fencers, farmers and anyone who needs to set grades quickly and precisely, without the premium-brand tax.
If you set grades constantly, or you need to hit a slope precisely, Digital Grade is the best method available. Combined with Class 3 range, mm display tracking receiver, vertical auto-alignment and a 5-year warranty, the DGL1010GM is our flagship grade laser.
Features That Matter On Site
RedBack rotary lasers are built for real conditions — wind, vibration, sun, dust. These features come standard across the electronic levelling range.
Tilt Mode
One of the most useful features on any rotary laser. With Tilt Mode on, if the laser is knocked or disturbed, the beam stops rotating and flashes — so you know something moved and can reset before errors creep into the job. Standard on all RedBack electronic rotating lasers.
Vibration & Wind Sensor (VWS)
The opposite of Tilt — VWS is for windy, unstable or busy sites. It tells the laser to keep spinning through minor disturbances (a gust of wind, vibration from a nearby road or machine) instead of trying to re-level. Minimises downtime when you care more about productivity than pinpoint accuracy. Standard on all RedBack electronic rotating lasers.
Scan Mode
Turns an outdoor rotary laser into a visible indoor tool. Instead of full 360° rotations, the beam scans back and forth, intensifying into a visible guideline — ideal for suspended ceilings and indoor set-out. Can be combined with grade or manual modes. Standard across the electronic range.
Manual Mode
For slopes larger than the laser can set electronically (the electronic range is typically ~8–10%). Manual Mode stops auto-levelling so you can tilt the laser to any angle — commonly paired with a Grade Dial Plate (GD12) or inclinometer. Used for steep driveways and suspending ceilings.
Vertical Auto Alignment / Auto Tracking
A one-button vertical line traced between the laser and the receiver. Set the laser on its side for vertical rotation, put the receiver at the far end of the run, press Auto Grade Match with the X axis selected, and the beam automatically tracks left to right to lock onto the receiver. Game-changer for fence alignment and long-range building set-out — and a 90° dot beam gives you site squaring off the vertical plane.
