Where a laser earns its keep on a building site – most of these are jobs you’d otherwise do twice with a string line, a long spirit level, or a dumpy.
Rotating laser on a tripod, mm receiver on a staff – set FFL across the slab, check footing depths, screed-level boxing. One person, every check off the same datum.
Vertical line down the stud line plumbs every frame before the sheets go on. Horizontal line at top plate height confirms square in the room. Solo, no calling out to a labourer.
Rotating laser sets joist heights consistently across a long deck. Tilt the laser for a 1-in-100 fall away from the house if you want it to shed water. Same set-up checks every post height across a pergola or carport.
Run a benchmark off the survey peg, set instrument height, transfer the datum to wherever you need it on the site. One laser plane, all the heights come off it.
Cabinet rail line, splash-back top, overhead-cupboard datum – every height marked off the same laser line. Square laser sets the run for L-shaped or U-shaped runs.
Rotating laser with single or dual grade – set falls for paths, driveways, surface drainage. Receiver on the staff confirms the grade at every check-point in the fall.

The EGL624GM auto-levels in both horizontal and vertical – alignment and set-out plus levelling from one laser. The DGL1010GM does the same with a brighter Class 3 beam and more range.

For outdoor construction – slabs, footings, site set-out, datum transfer – a rotating laser with a millimetre receiver is the standard tool. For indoor construction – wall frames, opening checks, joinery set-out – a Class 3 green multi-line laser is the better pick. Outdoors with a rotating laser, yes – in daylight the beam isn’t visible to the eye, so a receiver on a staff reads it for you. RedBack millimetre receivers like the LR728 and LR730 display how far above or below level you are, down to 0.5mm. Indoors with a line laser, no – the lines are visible to the eye at close range.
In bright sun a line-laser beam washes out to the eye. The CX610G, Green3DMAX and XLG44 all have a pulse mode that pairs with an optional line-laser receiver, taking them to a 40-50m working radius outdoors. For all-day outdoor work at longer range, a rotating laser with a receiver is the right tool – that’s what it’s built for.
A traditional builders level (a dumpy or optical level) needs one person on the instrument and one on the staff. A rotating laser level projects a continuous 360° reference plane, so one person with a receiver on a staff does the same checks solo – every reading off the same datum, no second pair of hands on the instrument.
The BASIC614 is the entry point – electronic self-levelling with a dual-display receiver. The EL614 steps up to a 0.5mm millimetre receiver. The EL614S adds single grade via slope remote for falls and drainage, the EL614GM adds 1-button Auto Grade Match to the receiver, the EGL624GM adds auto-levelling vertical rotation and dual grades, and the DGL1010GM tops the range with digital grade. FFranz Franz6 months agoCustomer service was above and beyond. Product has met and beaten expectations. They were sold out of the package deal I wanted but contacted me directly when stock came in to offer it without waiting for it to go online. Had the laser over two weeks now and it's light beam is brighter than my mates DeWalt and the receiver works at a longer distance. Another cool feature is that the batteries have a USB C port on them for charging with USB C cable instead of needing another charger. Was dubious about them being cheaper than others on the market but I honestly can't fault it. Carry box also feels strong and sturdy.
