Tiling jobs a laser pays for itself on

Where a laser earns its keep on a tiling job — most of these are jobs you’d otherwise mark with a chalk line, plumb bob, or a long spirit level held against the wall.

First-row datum

Project a perfectly level horizontal line around the room at the height the first row needs to land. Tile to the line, no second-guessing whether the floor was actually level.

Wall plumb for first column

Vertical line floor-to-ceiling on the wall sets the start column dead plumb. Crucial for large-format tiles where lippage compounds with every row.

Square layout from a corner

3D and multi-line lasers project two vertical lines at exactly 90° to each other — instant square reference for tile layouts, no string-line set-out.

Wet-area fall to drain

Set a horizontal datum, mark the floor-waste height, and run a fall line back to the door. Bathroom and laundry slabs that shed water cleanly to the waste from every direction.

Lippage check

Project the laser line across a tiled section — high tiles cast a clear shadow on the line, lippage is obvious before the grout goes in. Catch it now, fix it now.

Floor-to-ceiling alignment

Vertical line transfers a floor mark to the ceiling without a plumb bob — useful when you’re laying floor tiles to align with a feature on the ceiling, or vice versa.

Why RedBack

The RedBack difference

Anyone can sell a line laser. Few back it properly.

Specialist range, not filler

We sell laser levels and measurement tools — that’s it. Every line laser on this page is one we’ve used and chosen because it works for tilers, not because it fills a catalogue page.

Built to last, built to be repaired

Solid construction, built for the long term. RedBack provides in-house repair and calibration services for all RedBack lasers and most other laser brands.

Real support, real people

Call us and you’ll speak to someone who knows the products. No scripts, no call centre, no runaround — just straight answers from people who’ve worked with these tools for 25 years.

FAQ

Tiling Laser Questions

What’s the difference between a multi-line laser and a 3D line laser?
Multi-line lasers project straight horizontal and vertical lines across a fan angle of around 120°. 3D line lasers project full 360° horizontal and vertical lines that wrap around the room. 3D coverage gives you a continuous reference around walls, ceilings and floors — ideal for full-room tile set-out and squaring.
Should I get a green-beam or red-beam laser?
For indoor tiling, green is around 4-5x more visible to the human eye than red. In a well-lit kitchen or bathroom you’ll struggle to see a red line; green stays sharp. All current RedBack premium and budget multi-line lasers are green.
What’s special about the Class 3 green budget lasers?
Around 95% of line lasers on the market are Class 2 (<1mW). RedBack’s budget UNG-prefix green lasers are Class 3 (<5mW) — significantly brighter and visible at greater distances. They often outperform name-brand line lasers at twice the price for that reason.
How do I check tile lippage with a line laser?
Set the laser low to the floor and run the horizontal line across a tiled section. High tiles cast a clear shadow above the line, low ones leave a gap below it. Walk the laser around the room — anywhere the line breaks reveals a problem before grouting.
Can I take a line laser outdoors for tile veranda or pool surrounds?
Yes — pair the line laser with the LLR705 or LLR805MM receiver. The receiver detects the laser line where direct sight of the beam fails in sunlight, opening up squaring and levelling outdoors.
What’s the most accurate line laser for large-format tiling?
For premium accuracy and brightness, the XLG44 is our flagship — Class 3R green, 9 OSRAM laser diodes, electronic levelling, ±1 mm at 10 m, 4 vertical and 4 horizontal lines, and the only line laser in the range with full electronic self-levelling. The CX610G and Green3DMAX cover similar work at lower price points.
Real support. Real people.
