Both set grade. They do it in different places, with different references, for different jobs. Most plumbing fit-outs lean on one. Drainage and pipe-laying contractors often run both.
Sits on a tripod above the work. Projects a continuous rotating reference plane that holds the slope you’ve set. Pair with a millimetre receiver on a staff to read fall at any point along the run.

Where a laser pays for itself on plumbing work – most of these are jobs you’d otherwise rope in an off-sider for, or do twice with a string line.
Set a 1-in-60 fall (or 1-in-100, or whatever the drawing calls for) and the laser holds it for the whole run. Single grade laser for straight runs; dual grade if your drainage system needs cross-fall too.
The pipe laser does both at once – alignment along the bore plus invert grade. The dot lands inside the target on the next pipe length, telling you the pipe is laid true and to grade in one glance.
Tap, GPO, towel-rail and accessory heights all hit the same datum. Rotating laser on a tripod, mm receiver on a staff – every point comes off the same reading.
Bathroom and laundry slab falls to the floor waste. Dual grade laser (or careful single-grade work in two passes) so the slab sheds water from every direction to the right point.
Run a benchmark off the survey peg, set instrument height, and every reading on the site comes off that datum. One person, one staff, no rope, no string lines.

Three ways to set grade on a RedBack rotary laser – the method decides the price band and how fast you can work solo.
The slope remote tilts the beam until the fall matches your mark – the entry point to grade work. The EL614S runs 1-person single grade setting via slope remote; the EGL624 adds dual grade and vertical alignment.
Position the millimetre receiver at the height you want, press the Auto Grade Match button, and the laser tilts itself until it locks onto the receiver – grade set, no calculation. The EL614GM, EGL624GM and GREEN624GM all run it.
Type the percentage and the laser tilts to that exact slope – 1-in-60 is 1.667%, typed straight in. The flagship DGL1010GM sets digital grade to +/-10.000% in dual axis – the quickest and most accurate grade setting on the range.

A grade laser sits on a tripod above the work and projects a rotating reference plane held at the slope you’ve set. You read it with a millimetre receiver on a staff. A pipe laser sits inside the pipe and projects a single laser dot down the bore onto a target plate, telling you the pipe is laid to grade and aligned. Grade lasers cover whole-site work – fall, datum, fit-out heights. Pipe lasers cover the pipe-laying itself.
Most plumbing is single grade – sewer and stormwater runs are linear, and you need fall in one direction. Dual grade comes in for wet-area slabs (bathroom or laundry floors falling to the waste from multiple directions) or larger drainage catchments. Single grade lasers are cheaper and simpler; if your work is mostly straight runs, that’s all you need.
Divide the first number by the second, multiply by 100. So 1-in-60 = 1 ÷ 60 × 100 = 1.667%. Type that into a Dial-a-Grade laser and the laser tilts to that exact slope. Use our free Slope & Fall Calculator for any other grade.
Each pipe laser has a minimum pipe diameter it can fit inside. The DR100 / DR100G fit pipes from 100 mm diameter; PL650 / PL650G are similar. Check the individual product specs for the exact range. For very large diameters or pipe runs above ground, you can also tripod-mount a pipe laser at the start of the run and project the dot down the pipe externally.
A 1-button way to set grade. Position the millimetre receiver at the height you want away from the laser (e.g. 100 mm below level at 6 m gives you a 1-in-60 fall), press the Auto Grade Match button on the receiver, and the laser tilts itself until it locks onto the receiver – grade set, no calculation. Or match an existing slope across undulating ground (driveway on a hillside, paddock fall) by walking the receiver and pressing the button.
All RedBack rotating lasers are IP66 rated for outdoor work. With a millimetre receiver, range goes from ~350m radius on entry-level models up to ~500m radius / 1000m diameter on the Class 3 DGL1010GM. Pipe lasers are mostly used inside trenches but project visibly outdoors at close range too.

FFranz Franz6 months agoCustomer service was above and beyond. Product has met and beaten expectations. They were sold out of the package deal I wanted but contacted me directly when stock came in to offer it without waiting for it to go online. Had the laser over two weeks now and it's light beam is brighter than my mates DeWalt and the receiver works at a longer distance. Another cool feature is that the batteries have a USB C port on them for charging with USB C cable instead of needing another charger. Was dubious about them being cheaper than others on the market but I honestly can't fault it. Carry box also feels strong and sturdy.
