On the Job

What line lasers are used for

A multi-line laser projects a set of horizontal and vertical lines from a single base, all referenced to the same self-levelled point. That gives you three core capabilities anywhere on site - and a fourth once you add a receiver.

01 · Level

A level reference, right around the room

The horizontal line gives you a perfectly level reference around the room, for tiles, dado rails, suspended ceilings, kitchen joinery, switches and outlets, picture rails, bench heights and anything else that needs to sit level. For all-day trade levelling the XLG44 holds ±1mm at 10m with full electronic self-levelling - the only line laser in the range that has it.

02 · Alignment

Plumb, from floor to ceiling

Vertical lines run perfectly plumb from floor to ceiling and let you align studs, partitions, fixtures, doorways, columns or anything else that has to be plumb. Plumb-dot models add a dot directly below for transferring points up from the floor. The XLG44AT bundles the AT1 auto-tracking base for one-person set-out.

03 · Square

Instant 90°, no string lines

Multi-line and 3D lasers project two vertical lines at exactly 90° to each other, giving you instant square for set-out, room layouts, tiled areas, framing and shop fit-out, no string lines or chalk needed. The Green3DMAX wraps full 360° lines around the room - the 3D entry point in the premium range.

04 · Outdoors

Outdoor squaring & levelling, with a receiver

Line lasers project a visible beam, but in 99% of outdoor conditions the sun overpowers it. The fix is a line laser receiver: it detects the lines anywhere outdoors, opening up squaring, levelling and vertical alignment on site as well as indoors. Full detail and the receiver range in the outdoor section below.

Buyer’s Guide

How to choose the right line laser level

Pick by lines, by mounting style, or by the work you do. Cross lasers for tiling and small set-out. 3D 360° for floor-to-ceiling fit-out and squaring. XLG44 family for daily trade use where accuracy and durability matter. The table turns that into a model pick, spec by spec.

The Basics

What is a multi-line laser level?

A multi-line laser projects a set of horizontal and vertical lines from a single base, all referenced to the same self-levelled point - one tool for levelling, alignment and squaring anywhere indoors.

A cross line laser projects a single horizontal and a single vertical line - the entry point for tiling, picture hanging and basic levelling. Multi-line lasers project a set of straight horizontal and vertical lines (typically across a fan angle of around 120°). 3D line lasers, often sold as 360° laser levels, project full 360° horizontal and vertical lines that wrap completely around the room - a continuous reference around walls, ceilings and floors, ideal for floor-to-ceiling fit-out, full-room squaring and large indoor set-out.

Green line laser levels are easier to see indoors than most red ones, but in our premium range both colours run Class 3R (<5mW), so brightness is near identical - red pairs with a receiver to ~150m radius outdoors, vs ~40m for green.

A Class Above

Why our line lasers are brighter

Brightness on a line laser comes down to two things, the laser class (power output) and the quality of the diodes producing the lines. RedBack premium line lasers run ahead on both.

RedBack Premium

Class 3R green & red lasers

<5mW

Power output across the premium range. Class 3R is the brightest laser class you can legally sell or use for construction in Australia (and most of the world).

  • Class 3R green & red, up to 5× brighter than the Class 2 lasers most other brands sell
  • Premium German OSRAM diodes on the green range, lighter, sharper wavelength most users find easier to see
  • The XLG44 is powered by 9 laser diodes, one per line plus the plumb dot, vs the standard 3 diodes other multi-line lasers use
  • Visible at greater distances indoors, holds visibility in well-lit spaces where Class 2 lasers wash out
Most Other Brands

Class 2 lasers

<1mW

Around 95% of line lasers on the market are Class 2, five times less power output than Class 3R. Most competitor brands rarely advertise the laser class for that reason.

  • Standard 3-diode line projection, fewer, dimmer lines
  • Generic diodes, more variation in brightness, sharpness and longevity
  • Visible only at shorter distances or in lower-light conditions
  • Not ideal for well-lit interiors, larger rooms or daily trade use
Built to Last

Calibratable, repairable, not throwaway

If you’re shopping for a line laser in Australia, do the calibration check before you buy. A surprising number of “premium” lasers, including those sold at premium prices by some of the biggest tool-store chains, can’t physically be calibrated when they drift, and don’t have spare parts available either.

Buyer beware, big-name doesn’t always mean backed

Many big-brand line lasers cost more than half the original purchase price for a simple calibration. Others can’t be calibrated at all. Many of those brands actually direct people to us to get their lasers serviced, and we end up telling people we can’t help, because the lasers physically don’t have the calibration access they need.

Every RedBack premium line laser is designed to be calibrated and repaired in-house. Send it in, we’ll check it, adjust it, fix it where needed. If you want a recommendation on which brands to avoid, we’re happy to talk you through it.

Take Them Outdoors

Outdoor multi-line & squaring lasers - Level. Square. Align.

Line lasers project a visible beam, but in 99% of outdoor conditions the sun overpowers it. The fix is a line laser receiver. Pair any of our premium line lasers with a receiver and you can detect the lines anywhere outdoors, opening up most of the capability of an outdoor rotating laser plus easy vertical alignment, square and set-out.

Red beam line lasers paired with a receiver run to ~150m radius. Green beam line lasers paired with a receiver run to ~40m radius. Both work from the same receivers in the range, so you can buy once and pair across any laser in the line.

Sunlight overpowers the visible beam outdoors. Pair any line laser above - premium or budget - with one of these receivers and the laser line is detected even when direct sight of the beam fails, opening up squaring, levelling, vertical alignment and set-out at distance.

Honest about what budget gets you
01 · Levelling

Pendulum self-levelling, fast

A heavy weight pulled toward the ground by a magnet finds level - fast. Reliable, simple, accurate to ±2mm at 10m on most models (±3mm on the UNG6631 family). Pendulum levelling is what nearly every line laser uses, budget through to premium. Premium pendulums are heavier and better-engineered; budget pendulums get the job done at a fraction of the price.

02 · Range

Indoor-first, outdoor-capable

Visible to ~20-40m indoors depending on model and light. Most of these support pulse mode, so paired with our LLR705 line laser receiver they work outdoors too - opens up squaring, levelling and alignment with one kit. Doesn’t quite match a rotary laser for range or accuracy on big outdoor sites, but it gets close enough for DIY and small jobs.

03 · Backed

Calibratable & repairable

Every laser in the budget range is calibratable. If accuracy drifts, send it in for adjustment. Most can be repaired too, though on the cheapest models there’s a tipping point where a replacement costs about the same as the repair. The point is the option’s there. Backed by 12-month warranty and Australian support either way.

Not all “budget” lasers are equal
vs Cheap Imports

Sourced, checked, supported

Our budget line lasers come from one of the highest-quality OEMs in the category - superior internal build to most generic listings you’ll find on the cheap-import marketplaces.

A lot of imported lasers ship without ever having their calibration checked, let alone adjusted. That means dodgy readings out of the box, before the pendulum has even had any use.

Every laser we sell is checked to be within tolerance before it ships. After that, you’ve got Australian after-sales support, warranty, and an actual path to calibration adjustment or repair if something goes wrong - not a one-way trip to a foreign warehouse.

vs Other Budget Brands

Class 3 brightness, more lines, calibratable

Most of our budget green lasers are Class 3 - about 95% of line lasers on the market are Class 2. Class 3 means brighter, sharper lines visible at greater distances. Our budget lasers often outperform name-brand line lasers at twice the price for that reason alone.

You also get more lines for the money. Many big-brand budget lasers give you fewer lines at the same price point, with lighter pendulums that drift out of calibration sooner.

And - depending on the brand - some big-name budget lasers literally can’t be calibrated, or have no after-sales support to do it. Once they’re out of spec, they’re throwaways. Ours aren’t.

Working in trade conditions every day? What you actually get for stepping up. Premium line lasers use the same pendulum self-levelling principle (with the exception of the XLG44 family, which is electronic). The difference is in build quality, optics and longevity:

  • Heavier, better-engineered pendulums on friction-free bearings - sharper accuracy and stays in calibration longer
  • Improved laser diodes - sharper lines, brighter beams, more discernible in all conditions, longer service life
  • Heavy-duty build for daily trade use - designed to handle drops and regular abuse
  • Better batteries sized for full-day on-site use
  • Up to 2-year warranty on premium line lasers (vs 12 months on the budget range)

FAQ

Line laser questions

Why are RedBack line lasers brighter than other brands?

A few reasons. We sell Class 3R (<5mW output) line lasers, higher power than competitors who mostly sell Class 2 (<1mW). Our premium green line lasers use OSRAM diodes, premium German diodes that project a lighter, brighter wavelength of green light most customers find easier to see. And our flagship XLG44 is powered by 9 laser diodes versus the standard 3 diodes on most multi-line lasers.

Is laser class important for line lasers?

Extremely important. Laser Class refers to the power output of the diode, higher Class means more power and more brightness. RedBack premium line lasers are Class 3R (the brightest you can legally sell or use for construction in Australia and most of the world) at <5mW output. Nearly all line lasers sold by competitors are Class 2 at <1mW. That’s why we mention laser class regularly, and our competitors rarely advertise it. It makes a huge difference in visibility indoors.

Can line lasers be used outdoors?

Yes, but not visibly. The sun is too strong to see laser beams outdoors in 99% of applications. To use a line laser outdoors you need a line laser receiver that detects the laser lines even where the beam can’t visibly be seen. Pairing a line laser with a receiver gives you most of the capabilities of an outdoor rotating laser, plus easy vertical alignment, set-out, square and portability.

Are green line lasers brighter than red line lasers?

Not necessarily, and this is a common misconception. It dates back to when green lasers first arrived in Australia and were generally higher-powered than the red equivalent. In RedBack’s premium multi-line range, both red and green lasers have similar power outputs (<5mW), so the brightness of the lines is almost identical and there’s no real visibility advantage to either.

Red line lasers are generally cheaper than the green equivalents, and have a wider working range when used with a receiver for outdoor work (~150m vs ~40m for green).

Why choose a RedBack line laser?

We sell premium line lasers that are designed to be fully calibratable and repairable, not throwaway tools. When shopping for a line laser in Australia, do the calibration research before you buy. A lot of line lasers sold here aren’t repairable at all, including some at premium prices from the biggest tool-store chains. Other brands charge more than half the purchase price for a simple calibration. Many of those brands actually direct people to us to calibrate their lasers, and unfortunately many of those lasers physically can’t be calibrated. Just because a laser comes from a big-name tool company doesn’t mean they back it up with after-sales care.

What’s the difference between a multi-line laser and a 3D line laser?

Multi-line lasers project a set of straight horizontal and vertical lines (typically across a fan angle of around 120°). 3D line lasers project full 360° horizontal and vertical lines that wrap completely around the room. 3D coverage gives you a continuous reference around walls, ceilings and floors, ideal for floor-to-ceiling fit-out, full-room squaring and large indoor set-out. The Green3DMAX is our 3D entry point in the premium range.

What’s the best multi-line laser level in Australia?

For build quality, brightness, durability and accuracy, the XLG44 is our flagship, Class 3R green, 9 OSRAM diodes, electronic levelling, ±1mm at 10m, 4 vertical and 4 horizontal lines, and the only line laser in the range with full electronic self-levelling. The XLG44AT bundles it with the AT1 auto-tracking base for one-person set-out.

What’s the cheapest line laser at RedBack?

The UN671D - an auto-levelling cross line laser with a horizontal line for levelling and a vertical line for alignment. Class 2 red beam, ±2mm at 10m, ideal for picture hanging, tiling and basic indoor jobs.

Why buy a budget laser from RedBack instead of a cheap import?

Two reasons. First, our budget lasers come from one of the highest-quality OEMs in the category, with superior internal build to most generic listings - and every laser is calibration-checked before it ships. Many imported lasers never get checked at all. Second, you get Australian after-sales support, warranty and an actual path to calibration adjustment or repair when something drifts. Cheap imports usually offer none of that.

Is a budget line laser any good?

For occasional, DIY or smaller indoor work - yes. They self-level using a pendulum, project clean lines, and most hold accuracy to ±2mm at 10m. They lack the premium build quality and brighter diodes of trade-grade lasers, but they do the basic job properly. Backed by 12-month warranty, Australian support, calibration and repair where economical.

What’s special about the Class 3 green budget lasers?

Around 95% of line lasers on the market are Class 2. RedBack’s budget green lasers (UNG-prefix models) are Class 3 - significantly brighter and sharper, visible at greater distances. They often outperform name-brand line lasers at twice the price for that reason.

Can I use a budget line laser outdoors?

Yes, with a line laser receiver. All our budget lasers support pulse mode for receiver use. Pair one with the LLR705 or LLR805MM and you’ve got an outdoor laser as well. Doesn’t match a rotating laser for range or accuracy on big sites, but it’s a workable outdoor laser for DIY and smaller outdoor jobs.

Should I get a red beam or green beam budget laser?

Green beams are around 4-5x brighter than red and visible at greater distances indoors. If you’re working in well-lit spaces or you want maximum visibility, choose green (any UNG-prefix model - most are Class 3). Red beam is fine for lower-light interiors and quick indoor jobs.

Are budget line lasers actually calibratable and repairable?

Yes. Every RedBack budget line laser can be sent back for calibration adjustment if it drifts, and most can be repaired if something fails. On the cheapest models there’s a tipping point where a replacement costs about the same as a repair - but the option is there. Some big-name budget lasers literally can’t be calibrated; once they’re out of spec, they’re throwaways.

What’s the difference between a budget and premium line laser?

Both ranges use pendulum self-levelling (only the XLG44 family is electronic). Premium adds heavier pendulums on friction-free bearings, sharper diodes (brighter, longer-lasting lines), heavy-duty build for daily trade use, better batteries and up to a 2-year warranty. See the premium range above for the step-up models.
