Use cases

Fit-out jobs a laser pays for itself on

Where a multi-line laser earns its keep on fit-out work – most of these are jobs you’d otherwise mark twice with a chalk line and a long spirit level.

01 · Partitions

Wall & partition set-out

Square laser projects two perpendicular vertical lines plus a horizontal – set out partition runs, internal walls and door openings off a single set-up. Perfect right angles without a string line.

02 · Cabinetry

Cabinetry & joinery installs

Carcass top line, bench height, overhead-cabinet datum – every height marked off the same laser line. Square laser sets the run for L-shaped or U-shaped cabinet work.

03 · Ceilings

Suspended ceiling grid

Level horizontal line all the way around the room sets the grid track height in one set-up. Read the line off the wall, fix the track, every wall hits the same level.

04 · Downlights

Downlight & HVAC grids

Square multi-line laser sets the row and column lines for any ceiling-mounted grid in one set-up. Mark the intersections, drill the cans or cut the diffusers, every fitting hits the right spot.

05 · Services

GPO, switch & data outlets

Set the laser at outlet height and walk every plate on the wall to the line. One person, no chalk line, every outlet hits the same level.

06 · Racking

Pallet racking & shelving

Plumb verticals on every upright, level horizontals across every beam line. Long warehouse-scale runs without re-measuring at every post.

On Video · Downlight Set-Out

Downlight installation with an indoor laser

A two-minute comparison of the indoor dot, 3D and multi-line lasers electricians use for downlight installation and electrical fit-out. The same grid method covers HVAC diffusers, sprinkler heads and any other ceiling-mounted layout.

Sparkies have their own page – laser levels for electricians – and tilers use the same square verticals to keep tile lines honest: see lasers for tiling. Transferring single points floor-to-ceiling instead? That’s a job for a dot laser.

Red or Green?

Red beam or green beam?

In RedBack’s premium multi-line range, red and green beams have similar power outputs (<5 mW) – brightness is almost identical to the eye. Pick by working range and budget, not by visibility.

Red Beam

Cheaper, longer outdoor range

Cheaper than the green equivalent. Pairs with a line-laser receiver for outdoor work at a longer range – roughly 150 m radius vs the green’s 40 m. Pick red if you’ll use a receiver outdoors.

Best for:

  • Indoor fit-out where line is visible
  • Outdoor decking / pergola with receiver
  • Anyone wanting a cheaper premium laser
Green Beam

More visible to the eye in some lighting

Same diode power as the red, but the green wavelength reads brighter to the human eye in some conditions. Shorter range with a receiver. Pick green if it’s a pure indoor laser and you never use a receiver outdoors.

Best for:

  • Pure indoor fit-out work
  • Brightly lit indoor commercial sites
  • Premium feel, premium price
Buyer’s Guide

How to choose a fit-out laser level

Start with the job in front of you – cabinet installation, wall set-out, ceiling grids or floor levelling – then match the lines, brightness and accuracy to how often the laser earns its keep.

Kitchens, cabinets & joinery

Pick a laser that rotates around its plumb axis – the XLG44 for daily installs, or the UNG641 on a budget. Set the carcass line once, swing the verticals to square the run.

Partitions & wall set-out

Two perpendicular verticals plus a horizontal set out walls off one set-up. The Green3DMAX covers the full room with 3 × 360° lines; the CX610G runs 4 verticals at 90° to each other.

Ceiling grids, downlights & services

Full 360° coverage marks grid lines and heights in one set-up – the UNG6631 kit or the UNG6631B. Electrical work? See lasers for electricians.

Flooring & floor levelling

The UNG6631B and UNG6631 project a horizontal line that sits 8mm above the floor – easy tape-measure floor checks.

Occasional level & plumb jobs

A cross-line laser is enough – the L203 or UN671D in red, or the Class 3 green UNG6001 for brighter rooms.

Outdoor levelling, falls & set-out

Line lasers work outdoors with a receiver – red beam to roughly 150m radius with the LLR705. For big outdoor runs and drainage grades, step up to a rotating laser or grade laser.

FAQ

Fit-out laser questions

What laser level do I need for fit-out work?

A multi-line laser. It projects a level horizontal, plumb verticals and a 90° square – solo, in seconds – which covers most fit-out jobs: wall and partition set-out, cabinetry, ceiling grids and services layout. The premium 9-diode XLG44 family suits daily commercial work; budget multi-line and cross-line lasers handle occasional jobs.

What’s the best laser level for cabinet installation?

One with a horizontal line for heights plus vertical lines for the run. Carcass top line, bench height, overhead-cabinet datum – every height marked off the same laser line, and the square verticals set the run for L-shaped or U-shaped cabinet work. Lasers that rotate around their plumb axis – the XLG44 for daily installs or the UNG641 on a budget – make squaring cabinet runs easier.

Red beam or green beam – which is better for fit-out?

In RedBack’s premium multi-line range, red and green beams have similar power outputs (under 5mW) – brightness is almost identical to the eye, so pick by working range and budget, not by visibility. Red is cheaper and pairs with a line laser receiver outdoors at roughly 150m radius vs the green’s 40m. Green reads brighter to the human eye in some indoor conditions – the pick for a pure indoor laser.

Can I use a fit-out laser level outdoors?

Indoors the line is visible to the eye. Outdoors or in bright light the beam washes out, so run pulse mode with a line laser receiver like the LLR705 – it detects red line lasers to roughly 150m radius and green to 40m. For long-range outdoor levelling, falls and drainage, a rotating laser or grade laser is the better tool.

What’s the difference between a cross-line laser and a multi-line laser?

A cross-line laser projects one horizontal and one vertical line – enough for simple level-and-plumb jobs. A multi-line laser adds extra verticals, or full 360° lines, for square, alignment and complete room coverage – full fit-out work without moving the laser. The complete range is on our line lasers page.

How do I set out downlights with a laser level?

Use a square multi-line laser to set the row and column lines for the ceiling grid in one set-up. Mark the intersections, drill the cans or cut the diffusers – every fitting hits the right spot. The same method covers HVAC diffusers and any ceiling-mounted grid. Electricians: see the dedicated electrical fit-out laser page.

How accurate are fit-out laser levels?

The servo-electronic XLG44 is rated +/-1mm at 10m – the most accurate in this range. Pendulum-levelling models like the Green3DMAX and CX610G are rated +/-2mm at 10m, and the budget 3D models +/-3mm at 10m. All of them self-level automatically.

Do I need a tripod for a fit-out laser?

Not always. The 3MIMP indoor monopole locks a laser at any height in rooms up to 3m without a tripod, the WB5 wall bracket gives height-adjustable wall mounting, and the DC10 suction mount holds a laser on a wall without magnets or drilled holes. Most models also take a standard tripod thread.
