Three Ways to Set Grade

Manual, Auto Grade Match or Digital

Every RedBack grade laser sets slope one of three ways. Find the method that matches how you work – each one steps up in speed and precision, and each video shows it on a real job.

Method 01 · Manual Grade

Manual grade via slope remote

Manual grade setting uses the slope remote to tilt the laser’s beam to the percentage of slope you need. It’s the classic, tried-and-tested method on any rotary laser level with slope, and it’s the baseline capability across the RedBack grade range – from the entry-level EL614S through to the EGL624GM.

If you’re matching to a known grade – say a 1-in-60 drainage fall – you set the slope value and the laser holds it from that point on. Need to crunch the percentage for your run? Use the free Slope & Fall Calculator to work it out. Pair with a mm display receiver for high accuracy at the receiver end of the run.

  • Single or dual grade depending on laser model
  • Works across the full levelling range (up to ~8%)
  • Remote range to ~60m on supported lasers

Method 02 · Auto Grade Match

Auto Grade Match – 1-button slope to the receiver

Electronic Auto Grade Tracking is a radio link between the laser and the receiver. Set the receiver at the height you want on one of the laser’s axes, press the tracking button on the receiver, and the laser slopes up or down until the beam locks onto it. Auto-grade matches in seconds – fast, accurate, repeatable. And crucially, it lets one person do the job: with Grade Tracking, the laser does the dialling for you.

Set grade by height at distance: position the receiver at the target height away from the laser (for example, 100mm below level at 6m gives a 1-in-60 fall), press the auto-grade match button, and the laser finds and locks to it automatically.

Match an existing grade: ideal for setting a consistent grade across undulating ground – like a driveway on a hillside. Set the laser and receiver to equal heights above ground, move the receiver up or down the run, press the auto-grade button with the axis selected, and the laser locks to that position. From then on, a level reading anywhere along that axis means you’re on grade.

On lasers with vertical auto-alignment – EGL624GM and DGL1010GM – the same tracking logic works on a vertical plane, making it the ideal setup for fence alignment or long-range building set-out. Entry-level EL614GM covers horizontal auto-grade only.

  • 1-button grade matching via the LR720T / LR730T tracking receivers
  • Track to an existing slope across undulating ground
  • Tracking range to ~50-80m depending on model
  • Doubles as vertical auto-alignment for fencing & set-out (on supported models)

Three tiers of “GM” Grade Match laser: the EL614GM is the entry point – horizontal auto grade match, simpler feature set, lower cost. The EGL624GM adds vertical-plane auto alignment for fence runs, set-out and plumb references. The DGL1010GM tops it with a digital display that shows grade as a percentage during Auto Grade Match – read existing grades straight off the screen. Method 03 · Digital Grade

Digital Grade / Dial-a-Grade

A digital grade rotating laser lets you program a slope as a percentage on the X and Y axes. The laser angles itself to the grade you’ve entered and holds it – no slope plates, no manual angling, no second-guessing the bubble vial. Type the grade. Hit set. Walk the line.

And because it sets percentages independently on both axes, you can run a single fall in one direction or a true compound grade – say, 1.667% along one axis and 0.5% across the other – without doing maths in your head. The laser does the geometry.

Digital Grade – often called Dial-a-Grade – is a feature normally locked away in the most expensive lasers on the market. The DGL1010GM puts it in reach for earthmovers, plumbers, fencers, farmers and anyone who needs to set grades quickly and precisely, without the premium-brand tax. Combined with Class 3 range, mm display tracking receiver, vertical auto-alignment and a 5-year warranty, it’s our flagship grade laser.

  • Set single or dual grades with a 2-button press
  • Accuracy to 3 decimal places (e.g. 1.667% – not rounded 1.7%)
  • Grade range +/- 10.000% on both X and Y
  • High-end feature at a mid-tier price

Buyer’s Guide

How to choose the right grade laser

Two decisions matter: how many directions the slope falls in (single or dual – see the basics below), and how you want to set it (the three methods above). The table turns those answers into a model pick, spec by spec.

The Basics

What is a grade laser?

A grade laser is a rotary laser level with slope built in. Instead of only tracing a dead-level plane, it tilts that plane to a set gradient – so the one tool handles levelling and falls: drainage, trenching, driveways, pads and civil works. Outdoors it pairs with a mm display receiver that reads the beam electronically, hundreds of metres out, in full sun.

The first decision when buying a grade laser level – do you need slope in one direction, or two?

Single Grade

Grade in one direction

A single grade laser sets a controlled slope on either the X or Y axis. The laser automatically maintains that grade over long distances at a consistent accuracy. Ideal when the job calls for a straight, uniform fall.

Common applications:

  • Sewer & stormwater trenching
  • Pipe runs with consistent fall
  • Driveways and access paths
  • Simple drainage lines
  • General earthworks with one slope

Lower cost, simpler operation, and excellent accuracy across long runs. If most of your work is linear drainage or trenching, a single grade laser level covers it.

Dual Grade

Grade in two directions

A dual grade laser gives independent slope control on both the X and Y axes – compound slopes falling in two directions at once. The laser continuously self-adjusts to hold both grades across the whole site.

Common applications:

  • Car parks and large slabs
  • Roads and hardstand areas
  • Sports fields & playing surfaces
  • Large drainage catchments
  • Laser-controlled machinery & site works

Full control over complex geometry, higher productivity on large jobs, and no manual checking or re-setting. The professional standard for civil, commercial and infrastructure work.

Grade Maths

Convert grades to percentages

Plumbers and earthmovers usually get given grades as 1 in 60 or 1 in 100. Grade lasers want a percentage. Here’s the one-line conversion.

Divide the first number by the second, then multiply by 100. So 1 in 60 = 1 ÷ 60 × 100 = 1.667%. Type any of these into the laser and it sets the slope automatically – no slope-plate angling, no calculator on the bonnet.

Common plumbing and drainage grades converted to percentages

How to set a grade with a rotary laser

Slope laser level setting grade and gradients on site
  1. Set up the laser on a stable tripod. Mount the laser on a tripod at your target height and switch on for self-levelling.
  2. Enter manual grade mode. Use the slope remote to switch the laser into manual grade mode on the axis you want to slope (X or Y).
  3. Dial in the required slope. Press the slope remote up or down to tilt the laser beam to the percentage of grade required (e.g. 1.667% for a 1-in-60 fall).
  4. Verify at the receiver end. Use the mm display receiver on the staff to verify the grade is correct at the far end of the run and begin work.

Beyond Grade

Features that matter on site

RedBack rotary lasers are built for real conditions – wind, vibration, sun, dust. These features come standard across the electronic levelling range.

Tilt Mode

One of the most useful features on any rotary laser. With Tilt Mode on, if the laser is knocked or disturbed, the beam stops rotating and flashes – so you know something moved and can reset before errors creep into the job. Standard on all RedBack electronic rotating lasers.

Vibration & Wind Sensor (VWS)

The opposite of Tilt – VWS is for windy, unstable or busy sites. It tells the laser to keep spinning through minor disturbances (a gust of wind, vibration from a nearby road or machine) instead of trying to re-level. Minimises downtime when you care more about productivity than pinpoint accuracy. Standard on all RedBack electronic rotating lasers.

Scan Mode

Turns an outdoor rotary laser into a visible indoor tool. Instead of full 360° rotations, the beam scans back and forth, intensifying into a visible guideline – ideal for suspended ceilings and indoor set-out. Can be combined with grade or manual modes. Standard across the electronic range.

Manual Mode

For slopes larger than the laser can set electronically (the electronic range is typically ~8-10%). Manual Mode stops auto-levelling so you can tilt the laser to any angle – commonly paired with a Grade Dial Plate (GD12) or inclinometer. Used for steep driveways and suspending ceilings.

Vertical Auto Alignment / Auto Tracking

A one-button vertical line traced between the laser and the receiver. Set the laser on its side for vertical rotation, put the receiver at the far end of the run, press Auto Grade Match with the X axis selected, and the beam automatically tracks left to right to lock onto the receiver. Game-changer for fence alignment and long-range building set-out – and a 90° dot beam gives you site squaring off the vertical plane.

FAQ

Grade laser questions

What’s the difference between a single grade and dual grade laser?

A single grade laser sets a slope in one direction (either the X or Y axis) – ideal for drainage, trenching and pipe runs. A dual grade laser sets compound slopes on both the X and Y axes at once – used for car parks, slabs, roads, sports fields and large drainage catchments.

What is Auto Grade Match?

Auto Grade Match is a 1-button way to set slope. You position the mm display tracking receiver at the height you want, press the button, and the laser tilts its beam to find and lock onto that height – setting the grade automatically. It also lets you match an existing grade across undulating ground, such as a driveway on a hillside.

Which RedBack laser has Digital Grade / Dial-a-Grade?

The DGL1010GM. Dial grades as a percentage on both the X and Y axes to three decimal places (e.g. 1.667%, not 1.7%), with a range of +/- 10.000%. It’s the quickest, most accurate grade setting method in the RedBack range.

Can a grade laser be used for fence alignment?

Yes – rotary lasers with vertical auto alignment (EGL624GM and DGL1010GM) can be set on their side for vertical rotation, and the mm receiver can auto-track to lock the beam onto the fence line. This lets one person align fence posts over long distances, while the same laser still does everyday levelling work.

What range do RedBack grade lasers cover?

It depends on the model and whether you’re using a receiver. Ranges across the grade laser line-up run from 350m radius on the entry-level models up to 500m radius / 1000m diameter on the Class 3 DGL1010GM – all IP66 rated for outdoor work.

Do RedBack grade lasers work with machine receivers?

Yes. The grade range pairs with RedBack machine receivers for laser-controlled earthmoving – bringing auto grade control to dozers, graders, excavators and skid steers. Speak with us for the right combination for your machine and application.

How do I work out the percentage grade for my slope?

Divide the fall by the run and multiply by 100. For a 100mm drop over 6m, the grade is (100 ÷ 6000) × 100 = 1.667%. Use our free Slope & Fall Calculator to work it out instantly for any run length.

What does “GM” mean on RedBack lasers?

The “GM” models are the Grade Match range. Not every RedBack rotating laser features Grade Match – only the models with a mm tracking receiver (LR720T / LR730T) and “GM” at the end of the product name: the EL614GM, EGL624GM and DGL1010GM. Press the tracking button on the receiver and the laser slopes up or down until the beam locks onto it.

What is a grade laser used for?

Anywhere a job needs a designed fall. Single grades cover sewer & stormwater trenching, pipe runs with consistent fall, driveways and access paths, simple drainage lines and general earthworks with one slope. Dual grades cover car parks and large slabs, roads and hardstand areas, sports fields and large drainage catchments. Every model still does everyday levelling work as well.

Can one person set a grade on their own?

Yes – that’s the point of the range. Manual slope-setting often needs two people: one at the laser dialling in the slope, one at the staff calling out whether you’ve gone too far. With RedBack grade lasers the slope remote, Auto Grade Match tracking and Digital Dial-a-Grade all work one person, one setup.

How do I convert a 1-in-60 grade to a percentage?

Divide the first number by the second, then multiply by 100. So 1 in 60 = 1 ÷ 60 × 100 = 1.667%. Common grades in plumbing and drainage: 1 in 40 = 2.5%, 1 in 60 = 1.667%, 1 in 80 = 1.25%, 1 in 100 = 1%, 1 in 200 = 0.5%. Or punch the fall and run into the free Slope & Fall Calculator.

What slope range can a grade laser set?

Electronically, the levelling range is typically ~8-10%, and the DGL1010GM dials digital grades to +/- 10.000% on both axes. For steeper slopes, the EGL624GM and DGL1010GM add Manual Mode – auto-levelling stops so you can tilt the laser to any angle, commonly paired with a Grade Dial Plate (GD12) or inclinometer.

What’s the difference between a grade laser and a pipe laser?

A pipe laser is the same digital-grade idea in a specialised, pipe-mounted format. Set it inside a pipe run, dial the fall, and the beam shoots the right slope straight down the line. The DGL1010GM is the all-rounder for site work; a pipe laser is the better fit if your job is sewer or stormwater laying inside open pipes day in, day out.

Can a grade laser still do normal levelling?

Yes. Every model is a full rotary laser level with slope built in – set the grade to zero and it works as a standard levelling laser for slabs, footings, heights and site levelling. The same machine doubles as a standard horizontal rotating laser the rest of the time.

Is there a green beam grade laser?

[PLACEHOLDER – Jack to confirm: GREEN624GM inclusion and positioning. Draft answer: Yes – the GREEN624GM pairs the EGL624GM’s Auto Grade Match and vertical auto alignment with a brighter green beam. Currently out of stock; confirm whether to list it here and in the GM grid/tier line.]
