Dot lasers on the job

Short walkthroughs of the dot laser range – what they do, where they shine, and how to set them up on real fit-out work.

On the Job

What dot lasers are used for

Three jobs cover almost everything a dot laser does on site. Find the one that sounds like your week and it points at the right model.

01 · Point Transfer

Floor to ceiling, one person

The bread-and-butter dot laser job: sit the laser over a mark and it shoots a plumb reference straight up and down. One person transfers floor points to the ceiling – downlight centres, penetrations, pipe runs – no string lines, no second pair of hands. It’s the everyday tool for electrical fit-out, and the same move sets out penetrations and pipe runs for plumbers.

02 · Set-Out & Squaring

Multiple references without moving the laser

With plumb up, plumb down and a horizontal dot, the 3-dot model carries alignment points around a room from a single setup. Square joinery, transfer set-out marks and keep tile lines honest – the fast reference for tiling and cabinet and fit-out work.

03 · Bright Conditions

Readable where a line washes out

Glare is where dots earn their keep. All the beam power lands in one point, so a Class 3 dot stays readable where a line laser fades – well-lit rooms, glass-heavy fit-outs, shaded outdoor work. In full sunlight even a Class 3 dot is difficult to see, but in shaded or overcast conditions it gives you a real advantage over Class 2 alternatives.

The Basics

When a dot laser beats a line laser

A dot laser concentrates all of its power into a single point – and that single point does six things a line laser can’t do as well.

Maximum brightness in one spot

A line laser spreads its power across the full beam. A dot concentrates all of it in one point – making it far brighter and more readable at distance, especially indoors.

Floor-to-ceiling transfer, solo

The 2-way plumb dot shoots a reference point directly up and down. Electricians and plumbers transfer floor points to ceiling without a second person – accurate, repeatable, fast.

Set up in seconds

Self-levelling. No strings, no plumb bobs, no waiting. Place it, let it settle, read the dot. For internal fit-out work it’s the fastest reference tool on site.

Compact and site-ready

Physically small. Magnetic base or bracket attaches directly to steel studs, plus tripod mounting to suit each model. Goes anywhere on site without taking up room in the ute.

Built tough

Rubberised housing. Pendulum lock protects calibration during transport. Built to live in a tradie’s bag without falling apart after 6 months.

Multiple references, one tool

The 3-dot model shoots plumb up, plumb down, and a horizontal reference – giving you multiple alignment points without moving the laser.

Buyer’s Guide

How to choose the right dot laser level

Three models, three different jobs. Count the dots you need, then match the beam to the light you work in – the table lays the differences out spec by spec.

Why RedBack

The RedBack difference

Anyone can sell a dot laser. Few back it properly – three things that set the RedBack range apart.

01 · Brightness

Class 3 brightness

Most brands sell Class 2 dot lasers (<1mW). RedBack’s Class 3 models go up to 5mW – up to 5× more powerful. In real lighting conditions, the difference is night and day.

02 · Built to Last

Built to last, built to be repaired

Rubberised housing. Solid construction. If something goes wrong, RedBack has in-house repair capability and service agents in QLD, SA & WA.

03 · Warranty

No-BS warranty

Automatic. No annual calibration requirement. No blame-shifting. If there’s a genuine fault, we sort it – no questions, no runaround.

Which Laser Type?

Dot, line or rotating?

Two minutes and you’ll know which of the three main laser level types your work actually needs.

A line laser projects a continuous beam across a surface – useful for level and plumb reference over distance. A dot laser projects a precise point – useful for transferring a single reference location with maximum brightness. Many tradies carry both – see the line laser range for the line-based options.

Working outdoors over long distances – site levelling, falls and drainage, fence alignment? That’s a rotating laser: the beam pairs with a receiver that reads it hundreds of metres out, even in full sun.

FAQ

Dot laser questions

What is a dot laser level used for?

A dot laser level projects one or more precise laser dots rather than a continuous beam. The most common use is transferring a reference point from floor to ceiling (or vice versa) – essential for electricians, plumbers and tilers working across levels.

What’s the difference between a dot laser and a line laser?

A line laser projects a continuous beam across a surface – useful for level and plumb reference over distance. A dot laser projects a precise point – useful for transferring a single reference location with maximum brightness. Many tradies carry both. See our line laser range for the line-based options.

What does Class 3 mean, and why does it matter?

Laser class is about output power. Class 2 lasers are capped at less than 1mW. Class 3 lasers go up to 5mW – that’s up to 5× more powerful. In a well-lit room or on a bright site, a Class 3 dot is dramatically more visible. Most competitors sell Class 2. RedBack’s D272G and D273G lead with Class 3.

Which dot laser is best for electricians?

For most electrical fit-out work, the D272G 2-way plumb laser is the right tool. It shoots a dot up and down, letting one person transfer floor points to ceiling without help. If you need horizontal references too, step up to the D273G 3-dot model.

Can a dot laser be used outdoors?

Dot lasers are designed primarily for interior use. In full sunlight, even a Class 3 dot is difficult to see without a detector. For outdoor point transfer in shaded or overcast conditions, Class 3 gives you a real advantage over Class 2 alternatives.

Do RedBack dot lasers need annual calibration to keep warranty valid?

No. RedBack warranties are automatic – no calibration hoops to jump through. Our Class 3 models (D272G and D273G) are covered for 2 years; the entry-level PLUMB1 for 12 months. If there’s a genuine fault, contact us and we’ll sort it.

Green dot laser or red – which should I buy?

Green wins in bright conditions. The D272G and D273G run Class 3 green diodes – up to 5× brighter than Class 2 and visible up to 60m indoors. The red PLUMB1 is Class 2 with a working range under 20m depending on light – the budget pick for occasional point transfer. If you work in well-lit rooms or near glass, go green.

How accurate is a dot laser level?

Every dot laser in the RedBack range is rated at +/-2mm at 10m. Self-levelling takes care of finding true plumb and level, and the pendulum lock protects calibration while the laser rides around in the ute. If a unit ever drifts, RedBack has in-house repair capability and service agents in QLD, SA & WA.
